History
Almost 50 years of Brahman breeding promotes confidence and enables us to guarantee the quality of the Tartrus Brahman. Graham McCamley took over Tartrus Station as a raw block of undeveloped country in 1954 as a 21 year old. Today the rich pastures and irrigated cropland are a far cry from the brigalow scrub and regrowth of fifty years ago.
The first Brahman was introduced to the herd in 1958. Today there are 800 stud breeders along with 2000 commercial Brahman breeders on the four property aggregation owned by the McCamley family.
Having been a third generation Polled Hereford breeder, Sir Graham was wary of the failings of the Brahmans at that time, but the Brahmans high adaptability to withstand the stress of the tropics proved their ability to perform more efficiently on Tartrus than the Herefords.
A program was devised to monitor and overcome the undesirable Brahman traits. This was made possible through weight performance testing in conjunction with DPI and fertility performance testing by a CSIRO-designed program. This rigid selection criteria has been the basis for the Tartrus breeding program ever since.
Tartrus Dams have been bred and selected to rear a calf without assistance every year. All bulls have been weight performance tested off grass since the beginning of the Tartrus Breeding Program. Sires used in our own herd have always been of above average weight gain. Quiet temperament has always been essential.
Tartrus Brahmans have had significant success in the sale and show rings and over the past fifty years Tartrus Brahmans have won major carcase competitions, prime cattle competitions and feedlot trials. With 48 years of Brahman breeding backed by unrelenting adherence to the Tartrus selection criteria; you can be assured that there is a Tartrus Brahman to suit your particular breeding program.
